Television actor Anuj Thakur, who appeared in shows such as Dhoom Machao Dhoom, Bandhan Saath Janmon Ka, Beend Banoonga Ghodi Chadhunga and Mahisagar, has died at the age of 33. He passed away at his home in Oshiwara, Mumbai, in the early hours of Tuesday, October 27, reportedly after suffering a seizure in his sleep. The news became public only days later, when his friend and collaborator Rupesh Sonar shared a tribute on Instagram on October 30.

Sonar, a casting director, learned of the death only after trying to reach Thakur on Friday. His family answered the call and informed him. He then met the family, including Thakur’s mother and brother, on Saturday, where he was told that Thakur had probably suffered a seizure and died in his sleep. The family has asked for privacy and is in a state of shock.

“I couldn’t believe it because I had met him just 10 days earlier,” Sonar told The Times of India. “I was shocked to hear that he had gone to sleep at night and never woke up.”

A Morning Routine That Never Began

Sonar said Thakur was an early riser who woke at 4.30 am every day and followed a routine of fitness and jogging. On the morning of October 27, the alarm went off at 4.30 am, but he did not get up. When his mother went to his room to wake him, she found that he had passed away.

According to Sonar, Thakur had suffered another seizure earlier this year and had been on medication. “This time, probably because he was alone, he could not be saved,” he said. These details come from the family’s account to Sonar and have not been independently confirmed. Thakur had been away from the industry for a while, though the two stayed in touch, and Sonar said he had been talking about a comeback. His family has travelled to Haridwar for the last rites.

A Friendship Spanning 17 Years

Sonar had known Thakur for 17 years. Their association began with Bandhan Saath Janmon Ka in 2008, and they went on to work together on several shows, including Beend Banoonga Ghodi Chadhunga. Sonar remembered him as a positive, happy person and said he was yet to come to terms with the loss.

“Still can’t believe that you are no longer with us. You were not just a friend but like a little brother to me. We had so many projects planned together, and I still remember witnessing your struggles during your initial days and seeing your journey,” Sonar wrote on Instagram. “Life is truly unpredictable. It’s heartbreaking to accept that you are gone so soon. This news feels unreal. You will always be remembered, brother. Rest in peace.”

Thakur’s television work spanned popular shows across more than a decade, from Bandhan Saath Janmon Ka to Mahisagar. He leaves behind his mother and brother, and a circle of friends who say they had many projects planned with him.
