NTK chief coordinator Seeman’s decision to contest in the Ambasamudram Assembly bypoll (when notified) has set off a debate among the party’s senior office-bearers whether it should seek the support of the DMK and the AIADMK for fielding him as the “common candidate”.
A senior party office-bearer said Mr. Seeman had been facing “pressure” internally to reach out to the leadership of the DMK and the AIADMK and ask for support. “Though it is a longshot, our office-bearers are putting pressure on him to reach out to the other parties. Mr. Seeman has explained to them that such a move would go against the fundamental position of the NTK,” an office-bearer said.
Mr. Seeman’s decision to contest was being seen as “bold” and had reportedly energised the cadre after a disappointing showing in this year’s Assembly elections, which saw its vote share reduce by almost half — falling from 8% to around 4%.
Mr. Seeman is yet to win an election despite trying his luck since 2016. A senior member of the party said: “Only a leader who takes these risky moves can keep the party and its cadre with him.”
Regarding the possibility of a common candidate, a party leader admitted it may not “possible” given the current political dynamics in the State. “Our decision to announce that Seeman will contest has given rise to these speculations,” he said.
Party sources said while Mr. Seeman would not formally seek the support of the DMK and the AIADMK, he would nevertheless welcome if “they not contest the elections”.
