Jain Irrigation signed a deal with Supercritical to supply up to 19,000 tonnes of biochar carbon removal credits over 2026-27.

Supercritical is an online marketplace where businesses buy credits to offset their emissions.

The credits will come from Jain’s plant in Jalgaon, Maharashtra. Neither side disclosed the deal value, or how many tonnes will be delivered in each year.

Biochar is a charcoal-like material made by heating crop and food waste with very little oxygen.

Once it goes into soil, it holds the carbon for centuries. Buyers pay for every tonne locked away.

The Jalgaon plant has been producing since early 2026. It turns farm and food processing leftovers into biochar.

The gas from the process replaces fossil fuel at Jain’s industrial sites, while the biochar goes to its farming businesses and out to farmers as a soil booster.

Puro.earth is verifying the project, and BeZero Carbon is preparing an independent rating.

Steve Morrin, Supply Senior Manager at Supercritical, said delivery looks straightforward because the raw material comes from Jain’s own operations.

Founded in 1963, the company has worked with more than 10 million farmers, so the collection network already exists. Buyers are also booking early.

Supercritical’s market report says 81% of high-quality 2026 biochar supply was sold by July, three months sooner than in 2025.

The report also notes that corporate buyers are moving from one-off purchases to multi-year contracts.

Biochar will sit alongside Jain’s main businesses. In the April to June quarter, Agro Processing made up about 36% of revenue and Hi-Tech Agri about 30%, with the plastics division making up the rest.

Revenue from operations stood at Rs 1,518.32 crore, down 1.90% from a year earlier, and the company reported a net loss of Rs 17.80 crore.

On 25 September, Jain told exchanges it had repaid Rs 246.72 crore of debt ahead of schedule.

The payments covered debentures and term loans due up to 30 September.
