US midterm elections 2026: The US midterm elections 2026 are turning into one of the most expensive election battles in American history, with billionaires, technology entrepreneurs and major corporations pouring billions of dollars into political campaigns. Tesla CEO Elon Musk is among the biggest individual donors, with contributions of around USD 483 million during the election cycle, according to the Brennan Center for Justice.
However, the growing influence of wealthy donors is not the only in focus. A significant portion of the money flowing into election campaigns comes from sources that are not required to publicly disclose their identities. This is known as 'dark money', making it difficult to establish who is financing political advertisements and supporting candidates.
The election cycle has also highlighted the growing role of artificial intelligence (AI), cryptocurrency and other technology-linked businesses in political funding. These industries are increasingly contributing to both political parties, as debates over government regulation and business interests become more important.
According to OpenSecrets, total spending in the 2026 midterm elections is expected to reach USD11.9 billion. Meanwhile, advertising industry tracker AdImpact estimates political advertising spending at USD11.6 billion, exceeding the USD11.2 billion spent during the 2024 presidential election.
How much money did Elon Musk donate to US midterm elections?
Elon Musk has emerged as one of the biggest individual donors in the 2026 US midterm election cycle. According to the Brennan Center for Justice, Musk and one of his companies, United States of America Inc., have contributed around USD 483 million to support Republican candidates and political groups.
His contributions have largely focused on helping Republicans retain control of the US Senate, particularly in closely contested races such as Texas.
Musk's spending highlights the growing role of wealthy individuals in financing political campaigns. His contributions this election cycle are more than twice the amount George Soros donated to Democrats during the 2022 election cycle.
Other major donors include Wall Street investor Jeffrey Yass, the Uihlein family, billionaire George Soros and former New York City mayor Michael Bloomberg.
Are AI and crypto billionaires also enter the political funding race?
Technology and cryptocurrency industries are becoming increasingly important sources of political funding in the US.
AI investors Marc Andreessen and Ben Horowitz are among the prominent technology-linked donors. Their political contributions are focused on supporting deregulation, advancing the cryptocurrency industry and electing candidates favourable to the AI sector.
These industries have a growing interest in government policies, particularly those related to AI regulation, digital assets and financial technology.
According to Ian Vandewalker of the Brennan Center for Justice, new industries such as AI and cryptocurrency are increasingly contributing to both political parties.
He said these companies were "clearly hoping for light or no regulation from the government, which is only going to increase".
Vandewalker also described the spending by mega-donors such as Musk as something that "looks like a business investment".
This highlights how political contributions from wealthy technology entrepreneurs and companies can also be connected to their business interests and the regulatory environment in which they operate.
Dark money in US elections: Why are billions being spent without revealing names?
One of the major focus surrounding the 2026 US midterm elections is the growing amount of dark money entering political campaigns. Dark money refers to political spending by organisations that do not have to publicly disclose the individuals or companies funding them.
Dark money groups had spent at least USD 1 billion by the end of August 2026.
The Brennan Center for Justice estimated that dark money groups accounted for 29 per cent of the contributions made by the top 40 donors in the current election cycle. Around USD 699 million of the funding was largely untraceable.
The amount of dark money contributed by groups featuring among the top 40 donors has increased significantly. According to the Brennan Center, these contributions are now 13 times higher than in 2014.
Why are US midterm elections becoming a billion-dollar battle for political influence?
Which other billionaires are funding US political campaigns?
How are political donations changing ahead of the 2028 US elections?
The growing concentration of election funding among billionaires and corporations has raised questions about transparency and the role of money in American democracy.
Despite record political advertising spending, the direct impact of these contributions on election results remains difficult to measure. Some polling in closely contested Senate races has shown limited movement despite substantial spending on political advertisements.
Ian Vandewalker of the Brennan Center for Justice warned about the impact of concentrated political funding, saying, "In a democracy, it's supposed to be one person, one vote, and the more one person can influence, the less egalitarian our system becomes."
