The depression over the southeast Bay of Bengal intensified into a deep depression in the early hours of Sunday (November 1, 2026).

According to observations recorded by the India Meteorological Department (IMD) at 5.30 a.m., the system was centred about 700 km east-southeast of Chennai, 770 km south-southeast of Visakhapatnam, 770 km southeast of Machilipatnam and 810 km east-southeast of Ongole.

The system is expected to move west-northwestwards and intensify into a cyclonic storm over the southwest and adjoining westcentral Bay of Bengal during the next six hours. It is likely to further intensify into a severe cyclonic storm over the westcentral Bay of Bengal on November 2.

The development comes days after severe cyclonic storm Arnab hit Andhra Pradesh and Odisha on October 28.

So far, the State, where polling for the municipal elections is under way in 92 urban local bodies, has not reported any significant rainfall.
