The new Chief of the Indian Air Force, Air Chief Marshal Ashutosh Dixit, ahead of his first day in office delivered his first major speech to outline his goals for the coming decade. In his address, he thanked the Prime Minister and the Raksha Mantri for trusting him with this important role.

The chief explained that the nature of war is changing quickly because of new technologies like drones, artificial intelligence, cyber threats, and space capabilities. Because of this, the Air Force must transform and always be ready to fight and win.

To guide the Air Force through these modern challenges, the ACM Dixit introduced a simple and powerful strategy based on the word VAYU.

First, ‘V’ stands for Vigilance, Victory, and Readiness. The Chief made it very clear that every single squadron, radar station, and air defence unit must be fully prepared to act at a moment’s notice. A major part of achieving this readiness involves fixing the current numbers of the force.

ACM Dixit stated that his foremost task will be restoring the Air Force’s combat strength back toward its officially sanctioned levels. This means ensuring the Air Force has the correct numbers of aircraft and personnel to deter conflicts through credible air power.

Second, ‘A’ stands for Aatmanirbharta, which means self-reliance. The Chief placed a heavy focus on using equipment built right here in India. He announced that indigenous platforms like the Tejas Mark 1A and 2, the upcoming AMCA aircraft, and Indian-made sensors and weapons are his highest priority. The ultimate goal is to fight using Indian solutions and to hold them in large enough numbers to meet long-term, sustained operational demands.

Third, ‘Y’ stands for Yukti, meaning ingenuity and innovation. The Air Force will constantly monitor and progress new ways of operating, using AI-enabled command systems and layered defences to stay ahead.
