Voting in Andhra Pradesh’s urban local body elections saw brisk participation on Sunday, even as Pulivendula witnessed a political face-off, with YSRCP president and former Chief Minister YS Jagan Mohan Reddy accusing the ruling TDP-led NDA of intimidating voters, rigging booths and receiving support from the police.

Polling commenced at 7 am in 92 urban local bodies across the state, including 13 municipal corporations and 79 municipalities and nagar panchayats. A total of nearly 99.36 lakh voters are eligible to cast their ballots at 11,378 polling stations.

The state has deployed more than 36,000 police personnel to oversee the elections. Counting of votes will take place on November 3. Initial reports suggested that polling had reached around 20 per cent during the first two hours.

Tensions escalated in Pulivendula, which is considered Jagan’s home turf. The YSRCP chief alleged that TDP supporters were engaging in booth rigging in the presence of police personnel, attacking his party’s polling agents and assaulting women. He further claimed that YSRCP agents were being stopped from monitoring the voting process.

Jagan accused the State Election Commissioner, District Collector and Superintendent of Police of ignoring complaints and sought re-polling at booths where alleged irregularities had taken place.

He also claimed that permission for his helicopter to land in Pulivendula was withdrawn at the last minute as he was travelling to the town to cast his vote. According to him, the helicopter circled for around 20 minutes before being forced to make an emergency landing.

Asked about the INDIA bloc’s protest in Delhi seeking the resignation of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar over alleged electoral irregularities, Jagan did not directly comment on the demonstration. He said, however, that the Union government needed to answer the questions being raised.

The former chief minister also criticised NDA partners, particularly the TDP, and called for wide-ranging changes in the Election Commission of India and State Election Commissions.

“Reform is needed," Jagan said, arguing that free and fair elections could not be assured without institutional changes. He also said that scrutiny was necessary not only of the voting process but of the counting exercise as well.

The TDP, in turn, accused YSRCP supporters of pelting stones at police personnel and trying to disrupt polling. The ruling party rejected the opposition’s allegations and claimed that YSRCP workers were attempting to incite unrest.
