Amid the ongoing Local Body polls in Andhra Pradesh, YSRCP president and former Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister YS Jagan Mohan Reddy staged a protest outside the Returning Officer’s (RO) office in Pulivendula on Sunday after officials refused to allow him inside to raise complaints over alleged irregularities during the municipal elections.
Jagan objected to YSRCP polling agents being prevented from entering polling stations and approached the RO to seek immediate intervention. However, officials reportedly denied him entry, prompting him to sit outside the office in protest and demand a fair polling process.
Subsequently, Jagan submitted a representation to the Pulivendula Municipal Returning Officer, demanding cancellation of the entire municipal election process and repolling in all 80 polling booths.
In his representation, Jagan alleged that YSRCP polling agents were allowed inside only 10 of the 80 booths, while agents were prevented from entering the remaining 70 booths. He further alleged that TDP workers forcibly stopped YSRCP agents and tore their authorisation documents.
He also accused the ruling TDP of bringing workers from different parts of the State to Pulivendula to disrupt the election process. Alleging police support for the TDP and inaction by election officials, Jagan said the reported irregularities had seriously undermined the credibility of the entire municipal election.
The former Chief Minister demanded a comprehensive inquiry into all alleged incidents across the municipality. He called for the preservation of CCTV footage, polling records and other relevant evidence from all polling stations, besides recording statements from affected polling agents and Presiding Officers.
Jagan urged the Returning Officer to immediately forward a report to the State Election Commission recommending repolling in all 80 booths. He also sought legal action against those found responsible and adequate security arrangements to protect polling agents during the repoll.
