VA Tech Wabag Secures ₹1,000 Crore Desalination Contract from Reliance

VA Tech Wabag rallied 7% to peak at ₹1,812.60 following a landmark ₹1,000+ crore desalination contract from Reliance.

Reliance Industries Ltd has picked VA Tech Wabag Ltd to build a desalination plant and a remineralisation plant at Jamnagar in Gujarat.

The company told exchanges about the ‘Mega’ order before the market opened on Tuesday.

Simply put, a desalination facility transforms ocean saltwater into safe drinking water. The remineralisation unit then adds minerals back to that treated water.

The desalination plant will start at 8,400 cubic metres an hour and can later expand to 12,600 cubic metres an hour, which works out to about 302 million litres a day.

Wabag’s contract covers the complete lifecycle: designing and engineering both plants, supplying equipment, leading installation and commissioning, and executing final performance tests.

The system incorporates advanced filtering technologies, including reverse osmosis alongside ultrafiltration. The package also covers storage for treated water and a system to dispose of brine, the salty waste left over.

The victory, according to vice-president and head of sales and marketing S. Natrajan, demonstrates Reliance’s confidence in Wabag’s “proven technology” and track record of completing significant projects.

Wabag has just received many Reliance jobs. On 7 September, it secured a repeat order for an effluent treatment plant at the Dhirubhai Ambani Green Energy Giga Complex in Jamnagar.

That plant, which cleans industrial wastewater, is classed as a ‘Medium’ order worth between Rs 100 crore and Rs 250 crore, and Wabag has 13 months to finish it.

Wabag said at the time that the deal was not a related-party transaction.

By 9:55 AM on the NSE, Wabag stock had gained ₹98.80 (up 5.79%) to trade at ₹1,806.20, pushing its year-to-date return to 37.32%.
