Tata Kuno EV is going to launch

Tata Motors is working on an all-new midsize electric SUV, internally codenamed ‘Kuno’, to take on the MG Windsor EV, according to various media reports. The vehicle is expected to arrive in 2027-28.

Measuring about 4.3 metres in length, the Kuno will sit between the next-generation Nexon EV, codenamed Garud, and the current Sierra EV in Tata’s electric lineup. It will be positioned above the Nexon EV.

The SUV is part of Tata Motors’ plan to widen its EV range from six to 10 models by FY2031, a roadmap announced at the company’s Investor Day in June 2026.

Built on Acti.ev platform

The Kuno will be underpinned by Tata’s Acti.ev dedicated electric architecture, which supports different body styles and powertrain layouts, including front-wheel drive, rear-wheel drive and all-wheel drive. The platform’s flat floor and optimised battery-pack layout should help Tata maximise cabin space, a key factor in taking on the Windsor EV, whose roomy, family-friendly cabin is among its main selling points.

Production at Sanand

The Kuno is likely to be built at Tata’s Sanand facility in Gujarat. The carmaker is understood to be planning an annual capacity of 80,000 to 1 lakh units, suggesting it expects the SUV to capture a sizeable share of the midsize EV market. It will join the Curvv EV and Sierra EV in Tata’s midsize electric line-up. The name ‘Kuno’ is only an internal project codename and is unlikely to be the final production name.

Powertrain and range yet to be revealed

Tata has not disclosed the battery and powertrain details. Given its positioning, the Kuno could borrow battery and motor options from the Curvv EV or the Sierra EV.

The Curvv EV comes with a 55kWh battery and a 167hp, 215Nm front-mounted motor, with a claimed range of 502 km. The Sierra EV offers 65kWh and 75kWh battery options, with claimed ranges of up to 535 km and 665 km respectively. Its rear-wheel-drive versions make 238hp and 209hp, while the dual-motor all-wheel-drive version produces a combined 349hp and 504Nm.

Pricing expected in familiar territory

The pricing strategy is not yet known. Given its planned segment, the Kuno could be priced close to the Curvv EV (Rs 17.19 lakh to Rs 19.39 lakh) and the Sierra EV (Rs 18.79 lakh to Rs 25.99 lakh), all ex-showroom.

Tata has not officially confirmed the Kuno, and details may change before launch.
