DMK president M.K. Stalin on Saturday demanded action against police officials who had exceeded their remit by arresting Madras Institute of Development Studies (MIDS) professor Kalaiarasan. He also demanded action against the virtual miscreants whose activity had led to the arrest.
“Prof. Kalaiarasan was arrested over a comment on a fake ID. He raised his voice against the injustice meted out to him and came out. I appreciate him,” he said in a social media post. He added that creating a society in which there was no room for questions was not a sign of good governance. “Good governance is an administration that responds to the questions posed to it,” he said.
He said democracy demanded that a government accept criticism and rectify its mistakes. “Criticism should be countered with ideas, not the police,” he said.
In another message, Mr. Stalin condemned the escape of an autorickshaw driver, who had been arrested on charges of sexually assaulting a girl, from the Kolathur police station.
