Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis has described Jio Platforms’ stock market debut as a reflection of India’s growing standing in the global business landscape, saying the listing could strengthen investor confidence in the country.
“Jio is doing business globally, and its listing has sent a message to the world. It is a positive signal for global investors," he said.
Jio Platforms entered the stock market at Rs 1,358 per share, marking a 21.36% premium over its initial public offering (IPO) price of Rs 1,119.
Based on its listing price, the company’s market capitalisation was approximately Rs 12.6 lakh crore, placing it second among India’s most valuable listed companies, behind Reliance Industries.
‘Jio Platforms’ Listing Showed India’s Capabilities To World’
Speaking at the News18 Rising Bharat Summit (West Edition) in Mumbai, Fadnavis discussed the significance of the listing in a conversation with Moneycontrol Managing Editor Nalin Mehta.
He said the debut demonstrated the ability of Indian businesses to compete on a global scale, particularly at a time when international markets are navigating multiple challenges.
“This listing has shown India’s capabilities to the world. These are now global companies, Jio being one of them. When the world is beset with challenges, this instils confidence in India’s resilience," the chief minister said.
The chief minister also outlined Maharashtra’s approach to attracting investments, arguing that a business-friendly environment should take precedence over financial concessions offered to companies.
Fadnavis Emphasises Ease Of Doing Business
“Ease of doing business is more important than offering sops," Fadnavis said.
He pointed to differences in how states structure their investment commitments, cautioning that some governments announce incentives that may prove difficult to deliver.
Maharashtra, he said, had focused on ensuring that the benefits promised to investors were provided within a year of signing investment agreements.
“Some states are offering more incentives than they can afford. Sometimes they are not able to fulfil that. Maharashtra has been able to provide the incentives within one year of signing investments," he said.
“We do not default on the incentives we have promised," the chief minister added.
