Consumers in Karnataka are set to face another increase in dairy prices, with the Karnataka Milk Federation (KMF) deciding to raise the price of Nandini curd by Rs 14 per litre. Prices of some special and toned milk varieties will also go up by as much as Rs 12.

The latest revision comes soon after the state Cabinet approved an Rs 8 per litre hike in milk prices. The consecutive increases have triggered dissatisfaction among consumers and hoteliers, who have questioned the frequency of price revisions.

Chief Minister DK Shivakumar has defended the milk price hike, saying it was aimed at benefiting dairy farmers and took into account the drought situation in the state. The previous increase of Rs 4 per litre had come into effect in April 2025.

The proposed increase in curd prices has also drawn criticism, particularly from the hospitality sector. Curd is a commonly used ingredient in several dishes served at hotels, and the higher procurement cost could push up the prices of multiple items on restaurant menus.

Hoteliers had earlier urged the government to implement the price revision in phases to minimise the impact on consumers. However, Shivakumar maintained that the increase was necessary to ensure farmers continued supplying milk to local dairies.

He also pointed out that neighbouring states offered higher prices for milk, which could attract Karnataka’s dairy farmers if local procurement rates were not revised.

According to KMF, the selling price of Nandini toned milk has been increased by Rs 8 per litre, of which Rs 7 will be passed on to milk producers.

Karnataka has around 26.89 lakh dairy farmer members, with approximately 8.9 lakh supplying milk to dairy cooperative societies every day. The federation pays an average of Rs 28.60 crore daily to farmers for milk procurement.

Chief Minister DK Shivakumar explained that the price hike was designed to benefit dairy farmers and address the state's drought situation. It also prevents local dairy farmers from shifting to neighboring states that offer higher procurement prices.
