The Delhi Police have registered an FIR against three Members of Parliament following a complaint by Jamia Millia Islamia’s administration, accusing them of trespassing on the university campus and inciting unrest during a student agitation over the restoration of student union elections.

According to police sources, the case was registered after the university lodged a complaint against Congress Lok Sabha MP Imran Masood, Rajya Sabha MP Imran Pratapgarhi and another MP. Further details of the FIR are awaited.

The development comes amid protests by students demanding the restoration of the Jamia Millia Islamia Students’ Union (JMISU), whose elections have not been held since 2006.

Students Allege Detention Outside Gate 7

The Students’ Federation of India (SFI) has alleged that hundreds of police personnel detained students outside Gate 7 as the agitation continued.

In a social media post, the organisation described the police action as a crackdown on students. A student also claimed that a heavy police deployment had been made outside the campus, with students being stopped from entering the university and some allegedly detained.

There was no response from the Delhi Police to the complaint or the allegations of student detention.

    University Moves Classes Online

On Saturday, the university shifted classes online, citing security concerns. It also asked students to avoid visiting the campus and announced that the gates and libraries would remain closed until further notice.

According to the university, more than 1,500 teaching and non-teaching staff members, along with Vice-Chancellor Mazhar Asif and Registrar Md Mahtab Alam Rizvi, marched from the Ansari Auditorium lawns to Gate 7 to persuade the protesters to end their agitation.

The administration said its representatives made repeated appeals over nearly two hours, but the protesters refused to leave the site.

However, the SFI’s Jamia unit alleged that the proctor, registrar and security adviser attempted to remove the hunger strikers, dismantled their tents and dragged women students. The university, in turn, alleged that some students pushed security guards and teachers.

Talks Fail To End Student Agitation

The university said a seven-member committee of professors had held four rounds of discussions with the protesting students. It also said a JMISU Constitution Draft Committee was notified on October 21 and that disciplinary action taken or initiated against students over the October 12 protest would be reviewed.

The SFI has demanded that students be included in the constitution-drafting committee and that the university announce election dates for the current semester. It has also sought the withdrawal of all disciplinary action against protesters and the resignation of the chief proctor and security adviser over the alleged use of force.

The university has maintained that Gate 18 is the designated protest site and that the agitation at the Gulistan-e-Ghalib lawns amounted to an unauthorised occupation.
