The primary market had delivered a decent performance in Samvat 2082, with investors witnessing a flood of public issues and strong listing gains. However, a closer look at post-listing performance reveals that not all winning debuts translated into sustained wealth creation, which has also raised a question about whether the IPO frenzy can continue into Samvat 2083, as per ET Now research.
149 IPOs hit the market since last Diwali 2025
A total of 149 companies made their stock market debut since last Diwali. Out of these, 101 IPOs listed at a premium to their issue price, translating into an average listing gain of 11.7 per cent.
More importantly, 94 IPOs continue to trade above their issue prices, indicating that a significant number of listings have managed to retain investor interest beyond their debut sessions.
Listing gains don't always last?
While decent debut performances grabbed headlines, many IPOs struggled to sustain their gains over time.
Data shows that out of the 101 IPOs that listed in the green, 31 have since slipped below their issue prices. In other words, nearly one in three IPOs that delivered listing-day gains eventually turned loss-making for investors who held on.
The trend was particularly pronounced among IPOs that delivered only modest listing pops. Of the 41 IPOs that posted single-digit listing gains, 19 later slipped into losses, representing nearly 46 per cent of the category.
In contrast, IPOs with stronger debut performances fared better. Among the 60 IPOs that generated double-digit listing gains, only 12 later moved below their issue prices, implying a significantly lower failure rate of 20 per cent.
Not all losing debuts stayed losers
There were also examples of IPOs that staged a recovery after a disappointing market debut.
Of the 33 IPOs that listed at a discount to their issue price, 16 later turned profitable for investors, meaning almost half of the loss-making debuts managed to recover and move into positive territory.
Biggest listing-day winners of Samvat 2082
Several public issues had delivered bumper listing gains during the year. Templens has emerged as the top listing performer with a debut gain of 111.3 per cent, followed by Bharat Coking Coal at 96 per cent.
Top wealth creators so far
When measured by gains achieved after listing, the leaderboard looks different.
Rubicon Research has emerged as the biggest wealth creator among IPOs launched during the period, delivering returns of 242 per cent. Omnitech Engineering follows with gains of 201 per cent, while ESDS Software has generated returns of 157 per cent.
Will the IPO party continue in Samvat 2083?
The outlook for Samvat 2083 remains constructive, supported by a healthy pipeline of companies preparing to tap the capital markets, strong domestic liquidity and continued retail investor participation.
However, the experience of Samvat 2082 also serves as a reminder that listing-day euphoria does not guarantee long-term success. As nearly one-third of IPOs that debuted with gains later slipped into losses, investors may need to focus more on business fundamentals, valuations and earnings visibility rather than chasing listing pops alone.
