The power struggle within the Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) has now moved beyond Mumbai headquarters, with the BJP’s top leadership stepping in to express its displeasure over the growing internal turmoil. Union Home Minister Amit Shah has reportedly pulled up senior NCP leaders in Delhi, making it clear that the continuing confusion within the party is becoming a cause of concern for the Mahayuti alliance.

The intervention comes at a time when Parth Pawar, son of the late Ajit Pawar and Deputy Chief Minister Sunetra Pawar, has been steadily expanding his influence over the party’s organisational and decision-making structure. From appointments to key positions, including the national spokesperson and Mumbai unit president, Parth is believed to have pushed for people close to him, while senior leaders Praful Patel and Sunil Tatkare were increasingly being sidelined. According to a source within the NCP, Shah has reportedly expressed strong displeasure over the internal confusion and its impact on the functioning of the alliance.

According to sources, Shah is learnt to have told NCP leaders who attended the meeting in Delhi, “Whatever is happening within your party is becoming a problem for the entire alliance and it is affecting the functioning of the alliance." Only a few senior leaders of the NCP were called for the meeting by Shah as they have been strong supporters of Ajit Pawar from the beginning.

Those present at the meeting included Praful Patel, Sunil Tatkare, Chhagan Bhujbal and Dhananjay Munde. The presence of Bhujbal and Munde is particularly significant as both are considered close to Sunetra Pawar and Parth Pawar. The message from Delhi, therefore, is unlikely to remain confined to the senior leaders who attended the meeting.

The developments have raised questions about Parth’s growing authority and the manner in which decisions have been taken within the party over the past few months. Leaders who were reportedly pushed to the margins could now find their voices carrying greater weight, while Parth may have to engage more closely with the party’s senior leadership before taking important decisions.

Along with other issues, the discussion was mainly focused on the internal situation in the NCP and concerns over Parth Pawar’s style of functioning. These concerns were subsequently conveyed to Parth during the core committee meeting held at Devgiri on Monday evening.

The unease within the NCP had been building for some time. As Parth’s influence grew, leaders such as Umesh Patil, Zeeshan Siddiqui, MLA Vikram Kakade, Sanjay Bansode, Sanjay Khodke and Avinash Adik had reportedly gained prominence in the party’s decision-making circles. Meanwhile, Patel and Tatkare, two of the party’s most experienced leaders, were seen as increasingly marginalised.

The latest developments could now force the NCP leadership to reconsider that arrangement.

On October 25, members of the party’s core committee, led by Sunetra Pawar, met Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis. The party maintained that the meeting was primarily about seeking the return of the Finance portfolio to the NCP. However, sources said Shah had separately called core committee members to Delhi on Sunday, without Sunetra Pawar and Parth Pawar. During the meeting, several leaders are understood to have expressed their dissatisfaction with Parth’s functioning.

NCP national chief spokesperson Umesh Patil, however, dismissed suggestions of an internal power struggle. He maintained that the Delhi meeting was pre-planned and had been discussed when Sunetra Pawar met Shah. According to him, the purpose was to discuss issues that had been taken up with Ajit Pawar during his lifetime.

Patil also denied that the meeting involved any discussion about factions or differences within the party. He said drought-related issues and development works in the constituencies of some leaders were discussed. He further alleged that certain invisible forces were attempting to create a false impression of internal discord and a lack of coordination within the NCP.

Meanwhile, Praful Patel, Sunil Tatkare and Dhananjay Munde met separately at Chhagan Bhujbal’s residence on Monday evening. This was followed by a three-hour core committee meeting at Devgiri, the official residence of Sunetra Pawar.

State NCP president Sunil Tatkare said the meeting discussed organisational issues and the performance of party MLAs. He also confirmed that a meeting of all party legislators had been called for Tuesday, adding that such a meeting had not taken place for several months.

For Parth Pawar, it could be an important political test. The question is whether he will continue to exercise the influence he has built over the past few months or whether the intervention from Delhi will bring the party’s senior leadership back into the centre of its decision-making process.
