A waiter at a Taj hotel in Agra was allegedly slapped by a guest after a misunderstanding during restaurant service, prompting the hotel management to take an unusual step, permanently banning the guest from the property.

Paritosh Ladhani, Joint Managing Director of SLMG Beverages Pvt Ltd and Sincere Developers, which manages Hotel Taj Agra, shared the incident in a LinkedIn post. He said the decision to blacklist the guest was taken after learning that the employee had been physically assaulted while doing his job.

The waiter, identified as Kanti, comes from a farming family in a small village near Agra. According to Ladhani, Kanti was serving the guest when a communication gap arose because he was not fluent in English.

The situation allegedly escalated when the guest slapped him.

Ladhani said what disturbed him most was not only the assault but also Kanti’s decision to remain silent about it. When asked why he did not report the incident, the waiter reportedly said that he valued his job so much that he was prepared to tolerate the humiliation rather than risk losing his livelihood.

Guest Permanently Banned From Property

After learning about the incident, the hotel management acted against the guest. Ladhani said the visitor was blacklisted from the Taj Agra property for life the following day.

“I BLACKLISTED 1 guest from our Taj Agra property for life because of this HORRIBLE thing they did with our waiter," Ladhani wrote on LinkedIn.

He said a guest’s wealth, influence or spending at the hotel would not justify mistreating an employee.

“As a leader, I don’t care how wealthy you are, how influential you are, or how much you spend at our hotel," he said.

“ABSOLUTELY NO ONE has the right to disrespect someone from my team. Let alone physically abuse them."

‘Our Responsibility To Stand Up For Them’

Ladhani said the incident highlighted a wider issue in the workplace, where employees may sometimes hesitate to speak up when they fear losing their jobs.

“Hard lesson, but every business owner/manager/leader needs to learn this: if our employees are afraid to stand up for their dignity, it’s OUR responsibility to stand up for them!" he wrote.

His post received a strong response on LinkedIn, with more than 2,000 likes and over 200 comments. Many users praised the hotel’s decision and said employees need to feel protected by their employers.

One user recalled working at a large organisation where a senior executive once threatened to slap an employee in front of dozens of colleagues. The user said employees often feel powerless in such situations and thanked Ladhani for standing by his staff.

Another commenter, who said they had stayed at Taj Agra, praised the hotel’s staff for being courteous. The person recalled an instance when a staff member noticed their son was cold and brought him a blanket without being asked.

A third user described the hotel’s action as “commendable", saying that small but meaningful decisions by leaders can strengthen employees’ trust and contribute to better team-building.

The incident has also sparked discussion about how businesses, particularly in the hospitality sector, can balance customer service with the dignity and safety of their employees.
