Cyclone Murasu has battered coastal Andhra Pradesh and parts of Chennai and neighbouring districts in Tamil Nadu, uprooting thousands of trees and causing widespread damage as torrential rain lashed several parts of the region. The cyclone, named after the Tamil percussion instrument, followed close on the heels of Cyclone Arnab.
Cyclone Murasu crossed the coast near Ongole in Andhra Pradesh between 3.30 a.m. and 8.30 a.m. on Tuesday (November 3, 2026), and is likely to weaken into a cyclonic storm by noon. Several thatched houses collapsed and residents were stranded in Samatha Nagar in Ongole, in Prakasam district, following heavy rain and strong winds triggered by the cyclone.
As the outer bands of the cyclone brushed the north coastal region of Tamil Nadu, severe cyclonic storm brought widespread rain to the State’s extreme northern districts, including Chennai, from the evening of Sunday (November 1, 2026), as the region lay along its path. However, the intensity of the rainfall is expected to ease from Tuesday after the system makes landfall.
