A 19-year-old man in Maharashtra’s Kolhapur district allegedly stole gold jewellery from his uncle’s house, sold it for Rs 10 lakh and used the money to buy a Mahindra Thar. In a bizarre turn of events, he later invited the same uncle to the vehicle’s puja ceremony.

The accused, identified as Samar Chavan, allegedly took around 150 grams of gold from the house of his uncle, Umesh Maruti Chavan. He then reportedly sold the jewellery to a goldsmith and used the proceeds to purchase the SUV, according to  a report by NDTV.

The theft came to light when Umesh was preparing for the puja of the newly purchased Thar. While checking the family safe, he discovered that his wife’s jewellery was missing.

The family initially suspected that the theft could have been carried out by someone familiar with the household, as there were no immediate signs pointing to an outsider.

Umesh subsequently approached the police and lodged a complaint.

During the investigation, police began looking into people close to the family and also examined how Samar had managed to arrange enough money to buy an expensive SUV at such a young age.

A team led by DSP Shrikant Thikane questioned Samar as part of the probe. During the interrogation, he allegedly confessed to stealing the gold from his uncle’s house.
