The Union Cabinet has approved the PM Surya Sarovar Yojana, a Rs 5,070 crore scheme to develop 5,000 MW of floating solar power projects.

The Union Cabinet, chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, has approved the Pradhan Mantri Surya Sarovar Yojana (PM-SSY) to promote floating solar power projects across India. PM-SSY is a central government scheme for setting up Floating Solar Photovoltaic (FSPV) projects on reservoirs, lakes and other inland water bodies, along with Energy Storage Systems (ESS). The scheme has a total outlay of Rs 5,070 crore. The government plans to develop 5,000 MW of floating solar power capacity under this scheme. (Image: Instagram/@narendramodi)

Each project will have a co-located battery or energy storage system with at least two hours of storage, creating a total storage capacity of 10,000 MWh. (Image: Instagram/@narendramodi)

Projects will be sanctioned from FY 2026-27 to FY 2030-31. Financial support may continue to be disbursed until FY 2032-33. (Image: Instagram/@narendramodi)

According to a recent assessment by the National Institute of Solar Energy (NISE), India has an estimated floating solar potential of about 102.18 GWp across reservoirs and other suitable inland water bodies. (Image: Instagram/@narendramodi)

The government will provide Rs 1 crore per MW as Central Financial Assistance (CFA) after successful commissioning and up to Rs 50 lakh per project for feasibility studies such as bathymetry, hydrography, environmental assessments and other preparatory work. (Image: Instagram/@narendramodi)

The scheme will be available to all States and Union Territories. India currently has only around 700 MW of floating solar capacity. The scheme aims to increase this by 5,000 MW, making floating solar a much larger part of the renewable energy mix. (Image: Instagram/@narendramodi)

The government says the scheme could reduce around 10 million tonnes of CO₂ emissions every year, create 16,000-17,000 full-time equivalent jobs across manufacturing, installation and operations, improve grid reliability through energy storage, use existing reservoirs and industrial ponds without taking additional land, and boost domestic manufacturing of floats, solar modules, PV cells and energy storage systems under the Aatmanirbhar Bharat initiative.
