Congress MP Karti P Chidambaram criticised Commerce Minister Piyush Goyal for joking about long working hours, calling his remarks ridiculous and disrespectful to citizens.

Congress leader and Sivaganga MP Karti P Chidambaram on Tuesday hit out at Commerce Minister Piyush Goyal for joking about long working hours in India, calling his remarks “ridiculous."

“Ridiculous to tout our lack of professional work hour boundaries as strength. Shows the lack of respect & dignity we have for our hard working citizens," Karti P Chidambaram tweeted while resharing a video in which Goyal can be seen making the remark.

Addressing a gathering during an event with Dutch business leaders, the BJP leader pitched India’s hard-working population as a key advantage for businesses, saying the country offers a workforce willing to put in long hours and work even on weekends.

“Indians want to work hard. Nobody in India will tell you it’s five o’clock. And certainly no Indian will ever remind you it’s the weekend," Commerce Minister Goyal had said.
