The Indian Embassy in Paris has issued an advisory for Indian nationals residing in France and those planning to visit the country, urging them to remain vigilant as violent protests and clashes rocked the country over the past few days.
France has been witnessing some of its worst urban violence in recent years, after protests over rising living costs, deteriorating public services, and concerns about education led to vandalism, looting, and clashes in many cities.
“In view of the recent developments and localised curfews imposed in France, please remain vigilant and exercise due caution," the embassy said in an advisory.
It asked Indian nationals to refrain from joining large gatherings and crowded places where demonstrations are taking place.
“In case of any emergency, Indian nationals can contact: Embassy of India, Paris: +33 6 48 34 00 63 | cons.paris@mea.gov.in," the advisory said.
What Is Happening In France?
Violence erupted in France over the weekend following weeks of protests and student demonstrations over rising prices, poor school facilities, and growing anger over inadequate public services.
In cities including Paris, Lyon, and Marseille, several incidents of looting, arson, and clashes with police were reported in the aftermath of the demonstrations.
Over 2,500 people were taken into custody after the violent protests, according to Justice Minister Grald Darmanin. Authorities revealed that hundreds of suspects had been referred for prosecution.
Call For Fresh Protests
Further demonstrations are planned for Thursday and Saturday. France’s main student union, UNEF, has appealed to supporters for fresh rallies. Groups associated with the Yellow Vest movement have also announced plans to carry out protests over rising prices.
The government has, meanwhile, vowed a significantly reinforced security deployment to prevent a repeat of the previous weekend’s violence.
Trump Links Protests To Immigration
US President Donald Trump attacked the French Government’s immigration policies, claiming France was being “conquered, looted, and burned to the ground by migrants, jihadists, and communists".
Ahead of the November mid-term polls, Trump used the violence in France to warn his supporters about what he described as the consequences of immigration and political policies pursued by his opponents ahead of the US midterm elections.
French President Emmanuel Macron, however, rejected the argument, calling it “stupid". When asked whether his remarks were directed at his US counterpart, he responded “Among others".
