Kerala Flood Mayhem: The camps have been provided with drinking water, food and medical facilities, while authorities are taking steps to prevent the spread of diseases.

Kerala Rain Mayhem: At least 11 people have died and more than 7,600 people were shifted to relief camps as heavy rains continued to lash several parts of Kerala. Major towns and large swathes of rural areas of the state experienced widespread flooding and waterlogging following continuous downpour on Sunday.

According to the latest update from the state government, 7,674 people have been temporarily resettled in 273 relief camps across Kerala. The camps have been provided with drinking water, food and medical facilities, while authorities are taking steps to prevent the spread of diseases.

Malappuram Records Highest Deaths

Revenue Minister AP Anilkumar said four people have died in Malappuram, while Thiruvananthapuram, Alappuzha and Idukki have reported two deaths each. One person has died in Kozhikode. Search operations are continuing in several districts for missing people.

Steps are being taken to prevent the spread of epidemics. Pathanamthitta district has the highest number of camps (75), followed by Kottayam (64), Kozhikode (36), Wayanad (28), Kannur (18), Alappuzha (14), Idukki (13), Ernakulam (7) and Thrissur and Kasaragod (6 each).

Thirty houses have been completely destroyed, while 293 houses have been damaged in the rain-related incidents so far.

Several Districts Remain Waterlogged

Though the magnitude of the rains reduced on Sunday, floodwaters refused to recede from major urban centres in the state including towns like Aranmula and Ranni, leading to members of the public, MLAs along with NDRF personnel and volunteers joining hands to clear solid waste and remove clogged drains.

In Pathanamthitta, the water level has increased in Ranni, which was recently hit by a flash flood following heavy rain in the district.

With the Moozhiyar Dam catchment area under a Red Alert, authorities warn that the dam may have to be opened at any time if the situation worsens, and the district administration has urged residents living along the banks of the Pamba river to remain extremely vigilant and be prepared to move to safer locations.

In Ranni in Pathanamthitta, traders suffered heavy losses after the Pamba River overflowed following a sudden rise in water levels. Authorities have urged residents living along the riverbanks to remain vigilant and be prepared to move to safer locations.

CM Satheesan Reviews Situation

Chief Minister VD Satheesan has convened a virtual meeting with district collectors to review the rain situation, rescue operations and preparedness across the state.

The government has assured financial assistance to families who have lost loved ones, homes, crops and livelihoods, while those injured will receive medical treatment.

Congress leader Rahul Gandhi expressed grief over the loss of lives and urged Congress workers and volunteers to assist in relief and rescue operations. He also appealed to people, particularly those in hilly areas, to remain vigilant and follow instructions issued by authorities.

Congress MP Priyanka Gandhi Vadra also condoled the deaths and urged Congress and UDF workers to extend support to affected people.
