Jamia Millia Islamia (JMI) has issued a “final” warning to protesting students, asking them to vacate the Gulistan-e-Ghalib Building and Ghalib Lawn in the North Campus immediately, according to a notice shared by the students. The notice is dated 26 October 2026.
What the notice says
The notice says the students’ presence in the Gulistan-e-Ghalib Building, which houses the Departments of Political Science and Economics, is “unlawful” and is disrupting the departments’ functioning. It gives them “a final opportunity” to vacate the building and the sit-in site at Ghalib Lawn on receipt and to leave the campus along with their companions.
It adds that if they do not comply, “disciplinary and legal action shall be initiated” against them.
Students reject the notice
The protesting students rejected the notice, saying their 14-day agitation will continue until all their demands are met, including restoration of the students’ union and a definite timeline for elections. They said the notice offered no clear commitment on restoring the union.
The university has announced that union elections will be held within 15 days of the approval of the union’s constitution, but the protesters say there is no deadline for that approval. They described the notice as containing vague assurances and no roadmap for holding elections. The students said the agitation and hunger strike would go on until their demands are met
Tension since 12 October
Students have been gathering at Ghalib Lawn since 12 October. The dispute has escalated in recent days. Hunger strikers alleged that security guards assaulted them, tore down their beds and tarpaulin sheets and removed them at dawn, leaving several students injured. Students said several protesters were detained and later released, and that they re-entered the campus and reclaimed the protest site.
The university alleged that students took part in unauthorised gatherings and obstructed technical staff installing CCTV cameras at Ghalib Lawn on 15 October, and that a group damaged a camera. One student, Jasim Khan, was banned from campus for six months for allegedly trying to force entry through Gate No. 18 and obstructing the CCTV installation. The university also directed PhD scholar Lubaib Mohammed Basheer, national general secretary of the Fraternity Movement, to vacate Ghalib Lawn, warning of disciplinary action.
Demands
Students have demanded an impartial probe into the alleged assault, medical aid for the injured, accountability for those responsible and a dialogue on restoring the students’ union. The students’ union remains the central demand of the agitation.
The university administration has not issued a separate public response beyond the notice and the registrar’s order. The allegations of assault are the students’ claims, as reported.
