Jamia Millia Islamia Protest: The protest at Jamia Millia Islamia took a fresh turn, with a section of students rejecting a notice announcing the withdrawal of the agitation and insisting that their protest will continue, claiming that none of their demands have been met.

Despite a withdrawal notice being signed late Sunday night, the protesting students clarified that they are not calling off the agitation. Two student protesters, one affiliated with the National Students’ Union of India (NSUI) and the other with the Fraternity Movement, continue to sit on hunger strike.

The students reiterated three key demands, including a definite date for students’ union elections, action against university officials named by the protesters and an assurance that no disciplinary action will be taken against students who participated in the agitation.

The latest development follows differences among students over the terms of an agreement with the university administration, with some accepting the withdrawal notice while others have objected to what they describe as the absence of concrete commitments.

What Are Jamia Students’ Key Demands?

The protesting students are seeking an exact date for the conduct of Jamia Millia Islamia Students’ Union elections, arguing that an assurance to hold polls is not enough without a clear timeline. They have also demanded action against officials named during the protest, including the Chief Proctor and the Security Advisor. In addition, they want the administration to ensure that students who took part in the agitation do not face disciplinary action. The dissenting group maintained that the protest cannot be called off until its demands are addressed through clear commitments.

Why Are Students Rejecting Withdrawal Notice?

The disagreement comes after the university issued an order stating that students’ union elections would be held 15 days after the approval of the union constitution. The order also revoked suspension orders and show-cause notices issued to students during the protest and announced an inquiry into the conduct of security personnel during the agitation.

However, some protesters objected to the lack of a definite deadline for approving the constitution and holding elections. They also raised concerns over demands they say remain unresolved, including action against university officials.
