Defence Minister Rajnath Singh criticised Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge over his controversial “baap" remark about Prime Minister Narendra Modi, calling it an “insult to India itself" and an attack on the dignity of political discourse.
“I believe this is not merely an insult to an individual or a family, but to India itself. This is also an assault on the dignity of politics. In a democracy, you may register your opposition, question policies, and criticise the government—but please, do not cross the boundaries of personal decorum," Rajnath Singh said.
He asserted that PM Modi would not be swayed by such remarks and that his resolve to serve the people would remain unaffected.
“The Congress should remember that in a democracy, the public keeps track of everything and, when the time comes, provides a fitting response," Rajnath Singh said.
Rajnath Singh Accuses Congress Of Defending Mallikarjun Kharge’s Remarks
Rajnath Singh also accused the Congress of attempting to justify Mallikarjun Kharge’s statement instead of acknowledging the controversy and expressing regret.
“But the Congress did not stop there; they are now further hurting people’s sentiments by attempting to justify Kharge ji’s words," he said.
“Instead of acknowledging their mistake and expressing regret, the Congress is busy defending and validating this statement," Rajnath Singh added.
What Mallikarjun Kharge Said About PM Modi
The controversy erupted during an event in Patna marking the 139th birth anniversary of Krishna Sinha, Bihar’s first chief minister. During Mallikarjun Kharge’s address, an attendee reportedly interrupted him by saying that Prime Minister Modi would “not go anywhere". In response, the Congress president allegedly said, “Modi ka baap bhi jayega"- a remark that roughly translates to “Even Modi’s father will have to go". The statement triggered a political row, with the BJP accusing Mallikarjun Kharge of using offensive language against the prime minister’s family.
