Democratic Trinamool Congress chief Ritabrata Banerjee alleged that unidentified men tried to seize a truck carrying his faction’s affidavits to the Election Commission.

The battle over control of the Trinamool Congress took a fresh turn on Monday after Democratic Trinamool Congress chief Ritabrata Banerjee alleged that a truck carrying his faction’s documents to the Election Commission was targeted near the Haryana border.
Banerjee claimed that unidentified people tried to take control of the vehicle and remove the affidavits being sent to Delhi. Workers travelling with the documents, he said, resisted the alleged attempt.
The documents had been sent from Kolkata by road on October 24, according to Banerjee. His faction was transporting them to Delhi to submit evidence to the Election Commission within the deadline fixed by the poll panel.
Banerjee made the allegations through a post on X, contrasting his faction’s road journey with the rival camp’s decision to send its affidavits by air.
“Chartered Flight has carried Kalighat’s affidavits to Delhi on October 25 evening. Our affidavits are being transported to Delhi by road. Our workers have started with our documents on October 24 morning for depositing in ECI," he said.
He subsequently alleged that an attempt had been made to seize the truck.
“Half an hour ago there were attempts to take control of the truck and snatch our documents. Our workers have resisted bravely. The fight is on. A fight between Chartered Culture versus Grass Root resolve. Despots will not succeed in their attempt at organised loot in every sphere," Banerjee said.
Rival TMC Camp Calls Claim Baseless
The allegation has been rejected by leaders of the Mamata Banerjee-led faction.
Rajya Sabha MP Dola Sen dismissed the claim and said the people would have the final say in the dispute.
Kalyan Banerjee, the faction’s Lok Sabha MP, raised questions about the alleged incident as well as the route taken by the vehicle.
“The Ritabrata-led outfit enjoys protection of the central police force. How can the truck be seized when it is protected by the CRPF jawans? Also, why would a truck travelling from Kolkata to Delhi take a Haryana detour?" he said.
Kalyan Banerjee also alleged that the claim was politically motivated and accused the Ritabrata-led group of enjoying the backing of senior BJP leaders.
“These are all drama hatched by the faction which enjoys the support of the BJP top brass. Their allegation is utterly baseless," he said.
Why The Two Factions Are Fighting
The dispute is part of a wider battle over the identity and control of the Trinamool Congress following the 2026 West Bengal Assembly elections.
The Ritabrata-led group has claimed that it has the support of a majority of the party’s elected legislators. It has consequently sought recognition from the Election Commission as the “original" Trinamool Congress.
The rival groups are currently operating separately after the Election Commission froze the party’s name and election symbol while considering their competing claims.
Both sides have been submitting documents and evidence to the poll panel as part of the process to establish their respective claims.
The latest allegation over the truck carrying affidavits has added another point of confrontation to the already bitter dispute between the two camps.
