In a major push towards strengthening road infrastructure across Karnataka, the State Cabinet has approved road development works worth ₹20,000 crore under the Public Works Department (PWD).

The ambitious investment is aimed at improving connectivity across districts, taluks and rural areas, with the government focusing on state highways, district major roads, bridges and links between district and taluk headquarters.

The ₹20,000 crore allocation will be distributed across four major components — ₹5,000 crore for state highway development, ₹6,000 crore for road, bridge and building works, ₹3,000 crore for additional road improvement works and ₹6,000 crore for improving connectivity between district and taluk headquarters.

Here’s how the ₹20,000 crore will be spent:

₹5,000 crore – State Highway Development: Under State Highway Development Scheme Phase 5, Stage 2, roads spanning 1,897 km will be developed.

₹6,000 crore – Appendix E Works: Road, bridge and building projects will be taken up across various Assembly constituencies.

₹3,000 crore – Road Improvement: Additional funding will be utilised for various road development and improvement works across Karnataka.

₹6,000 crore – District and Taluk Connectivity: A new scheme has been approved to develop approximately 3,986 km of roads connecting district headquarters to district headquarters, district headquarters to taluk headquarters, and one taluk headquarters to another.

The government expects the investment to improve everyday commuting, help farmers transport agricultural produce to markets and enable businesses to move goods more efficiently.

The Cabinet’s decision comes with local body elections on the horizon and likely to be slated in January, making road infrastructure and connectivity important political issues for the ruling government. The massive allocation is also expected to give the government an opportunity to showcase its development agenda across urban and rural Karnataka.

Minister Eshwar Khandre said, “Cabinet has decided to allocat Rs 20,000 Crores for Public Works Department to develop district roads, state highway roads and taluka to taluka roads. This is a very big decision taken by the State Govt. We have also taken some many other developmental decisions in the cabinet…"

However, the key challenge will be translating the ₹20,000 crore announcement into projects on the ground, ensuring timely completion, quality construction and effective monitoring across districts and taluks.
