The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) is holding protests across the country on Monday over what it called “indecent and offensive" remarks made by Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge about Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
The protests come a day after Kharge, while addressing an event in Bihar, said, “Modi ka baap bhi jaega" in response to a remark from an audience member who said that Prime Minister Narendra Modi would not go anywhere.
BJP Holds ‘Jan Akrosh March’ In Patna
Condemning Kharge’s remark, several BJP leaders took to the streets in Patna and held a ‘Jan Akrosh March’ from the party headquarters to Dak Bungalow Chauraha.
BJP Bihar president Sanjay Saraogi, who led the protest, accused the Congress of directing its frustration towards PM Modi by making derogatory remarks about his parents.
“Yesterday, all limits were crossed when the platform to celebrate the birth anniversary of Shrikrishna Singh, the architect of modern Bihar, was used to make abusive remarks about the late father of the Prime Minister," Saraogi said.
BJP Protests In Several Cities
The BJP’s nationwide protest call saw demonstrations in several cities on Monday, with party workers taking to the streets in Delhi, Lucknow, Bengaluru, Patna and Jammu.
In Delhi, BJP workers protested near Kharge’s residence on Rajaji Marg and demanded an apology from the Congress president. The protesters were stopped by police while attempting to march towards his residence.

In Lucknow, BJP workers gathered at Hazratganj to protest against Kharge and Rahul Gandhi. In Bengaluru, BJP leaders and workers staged a demonstration at Freedom Park, seeking an unconditional public apology from Kharge.
In Patna, the Bihar BJP organised a ‘Jan Akrosh March’ from its headquarters, with protesters raising slogans against Kharge and burning his effigy. Similar protests were also reported in Jammu.
The BJP has demanded an apology from Kharge over his remarks about Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s late father and said the protests were being held at party offices and other locations across the country.
Rajnath Singh Says He Was ‘Shocked’
Defence Minister Rajnath Singh also condemned Kharge’s statement, saying he was “shocked" and “deeply hurt" by the comments about PM Modi’s late father.
“It’s deeply distressing," Singh said, questioning how such a remark could come from the national president of the Congress, a party that describes itself as the country’s oldest political organisation.
Singh also accused the Congress of defending Kharge instead of acknowledging the controversy. He said the party was hurting public sentiment by attempting to justify the Congress chief’s words rather than expressing regret.
What Did Kharge Say?
The controversy began on Sunday when Kharge was addressing an event in Patna to mark the 139th birth anniversary of Bihar’s first Chief Minister Shri Krishna Singh.
During the programme, an audience member was heard saying that Modi would not go anywhere. Kharge responded, “Modi ka baap bhi jayega."
The remark triggered a political backlash, with the BJP demanding an apology from the Congress president and announcing protests across the country.
BJP Protests In Several Cities
The BJP’s coordinated protests are being held in several parts of the country. Demonstrations have been planned in major cities including Delhi, Mumbai, Ranchi and Kolkata, apart from Patna.
The protests are aimed at putting pressure on Kharge to apologise over his remarks against the Prime Minister’s late father.
Pralhad Joshi Targets Kharge, Rahul Gandhi
Union Minister Pralhad Joshi also attacked Kharge while targeting Congress MP Rahul Gandhi.
Joshi said the BJP had long been aware of what he described as Gandhi’s “immaturity" and claimed that the same tendency had now spread to other Congress leaders.
He accused the Congress of lowering political discourse by referring to the late parents of political leaders. Joshi also alleged that Congress leaders, including Sonia Gandhi, had used similar language against BJP leaders in the past.
Priyank Kharge Hits Back
Congress, however, rejected the BJP’s criticism. Karnataka minister and Kharge’s son Priyank Kharge accused the BJP of turning “non-issues" into political controversies.
“These cultured people have forgotten what Modi and Shah have said in the past. We don’t need to learn culture from them," Priyank Kharge said.
Manoj Jha Says Kharge Remark Was Not Expected
RJD MP Manoj Jha, whose party is an ally of the Congress in the INDIA bloc, said such language was not expected from Kharge.
“There are no two opinions about this," Jha said while referring to the Congress chief’s remark.
However, he also questioned what he described as selective outrage, arguing that similar remarks had previously been made by BJP leaders about Sonia Gandhi and Kharge.
The controversy has now widened into a fresh confrontation between the BJP and Congress, with the BJP stepping up protests and demanding an apology from Kharge.
