Cryptocurrency exchange Binance has reported that $2.54 billion worth of digital assets have been frozen following a potential security breach.

The incident has raised concerns across the cryptocurrency industry, with investors questioning the safety of funds held on major trading platforms.

In a statement reported on 30 October, Binance said it was investigating the incident and working with law enforcement agencies and other industry partners. The exchange also temporarily suspended deposits and withdrawals as a precaution while its security teams reviewed the situation.

Binance described the incident as a potential security issue but had not confirmed the full extent of the breach. Its founder and largest shareholder, Changpeng Zhao, suggested that the exchange may have been targeted in a cyberattack.

Binance assured customers that their funds remained safe. The company also said the amount of frozen assets could increase as investigators continued tracing suspicious transactions.

Cryptocurrency firms Tether and Circle also helped freeze assets linked to the incident. Their actions were aimed at preventing suspicious funds from being moved or converted into other digital assets.

The security concerns triggered selling across major cryptocurrencies. Bitcoin dropped around 5% and slipped below $77,000, while other digital assets also recorded losses.

The incident highlights the security risks associated with centralised cryptocurrency exchanges. Even large platforms with significant resources can face cyber threats.

The final impact will become clearer once the exchange completes its investigation and confirms the extent of any losses.
