A woman in Bihar's Begusarai has alleged she was forced to lick sputum by a village panchayat after accusing a man of rape. Police have registered an FIR in the case.

A disturbing case of alleged public humiliation has emerged from Bihar’s Begusarai district, where a woman who accused a man of raping her was allegedly forced by a village panchayat to lick sputum as punishment.

The incident, which reportedly took place in early June, came to light only after a video purportedly showing the punishment surfaced on social media, prompting police to register an FIR and begin an investigation.

According to Times Now, the survivor, a mother of two, alleged that instead of receiving support after accusing a man from her village of rape, she was blamed by members of the village and subjected to degrading treatment during a panchayat meeting.

Woman Alleges Panchayat Publicly Humiliated Her

According to the complaint, the woman alleged that she was raped by the accused on the nights of June 2 and June 4.

She claimed that some villagers spotted the accused leaving her house, but rather than questioning him, they accused her of having an illicit relationship with the man.

The woman alleged that the village panchayat then imposed what it described as a punishment.

She claimed she was forced to hold her ears, kneel before the gathering and lick sputum in full public view.

The alleged incident was witnessed by several villagers.

Her husband, who works as a labourer in Tamil Nadu, was informed about the incident over the phone after it occurred.

Video Goes Viral Weeks After Incident

According to the police, the alleged public humiliation took place on June 5, but remained out of the public eye for several weeks.

The matter gained attention only after a video purportedly showing the incident began circulating widely on social media, triggering outrage.

Following the video’s circulation, Begusarai Police registered an FIR on July 31 and launched an investigation.

Officials said they were verifying the authenticity of the viral video before taking further legal action.

Police also said the man accused of rape was absconding. They added that if the video is found to be genuine, action will be initiated against all those involved in the alleged public humiliation.

Survivor Alleges Delay In Police Action

In her complaint, the woman alleged that she and her husband had first approached the local police station seeking to file a rape case. However, she claimed that officers refused to register an FIR at the time.

According to the survivor, the case was formally taken up only after the video of the alleged punishment surfaced online and attracted public attention.

She also identified several individuals who were allegedly present during the panchayat proceedings and the public humiliation.

Police were investigating both the rape allegations and the circumstances surrounding the alleged actions of the village panchayat.
