Vote counting for eight Bihar Legislative Council seats began at 8 am on Tuesday amid tight security, with allegations of the absence of CCTV cameras at a counting venue prompting protests by opposition leaders.
The counting will decide the electoral fate of 150 candidates contesting four Graduates’ constituencies and four Teachers’ constituencies. The counting process is taking place at designated centres across the state, with security measures in place to regulate entry and ensure that only authorised personnel are allowed inside.
Jan Suraaj Party candidate Anuj Singh raised concerns over the arrangements at the counting centre, while Congress leader Sanjay Yadav staged a sit-in protest alleging that CCTV cameras had not been installed in the area where votes were being counted.
Jan Suraaj Candidate Raises Concerns Over Counting Arrangements
Speaking about the arrangements at the counting centre, Jan Suraaj Party MLC candidate Anuj Singh questioned the cleanliness of the premises and the placement of CCTV cameras.
“You can see that a carpet has been laid outside, but inside, where the counting is taking place, there is a lot of dirt. CCTV cameras may have been installed here, but there are no CCTV cameras where the counting is taking place," Singh said.
Congress leader Sanjay Yadav also staged a sit-in at the counting centre over the alleged absence of CCTV cameras. He said he would continue his protest until cameras were installed.
“There is no CCTV camera at the counting centre, and I doubt there will be misconduct. If cameras are not allowed inside, please show us the official provision," Yadav said.
The allegations have brought the counting arrangements under scrutiny as the process continues for the eight Legislative Council seats.
Tight Security At Patna Counting Centre
The counting centre at Bankipur Government Girls’ Senior Secondary School in Patna was placed under tight security, with entry restricted to authorised pass-holders. Mobile phones were prohibited inside the premises.
Magistrate Anugya said that everyone entering the counting centre was being checked, including representatives, counting agents and officials.
“We are checking everyone. All those who have been issued passes and ID cards, including representatives, counting agents and our staff, are being checked. No one is allowed to carry a mobile phone inside. We are checking everyone," she told IANS.
Counting is being held at different venues for the eight constituencies. The Bihar School Examination Board’s regional office in Purnea is the counting venue for the Kosi Graduates’ constituency, while SVN Rajkiya Kanya Uchcha Madhyamik Vidyalaya has been designated for the Saran Teachers’ constituency.
The administrative block of the MIT in Muzaffarpur is hosting counting for both Tirhut constituencies. In Patna, counting began at Bankipur Government Girls’ Senior Secondary School, while votes for the two Darbhanga constituencies are being counted at Khel Bhawan-cum-Vyayamshala Bhawan.
Teachers’ Constituencies Record Higher Turnout
Polling for the eight seats was held on October 23. The Teachers’ constituencies recorded a turnout of 82.85 per cent, while turnout in the Graduates’ constituencies stood at 53.42 per cent.
The Patna, Darbhanga, Tirhut and Kosi Graduates’ constituencies together had 4.92 lakh eligible electors. The four Teachers’ constituencies in Patna, Darbhanga, Tirhut and Saran had a combined electorate of 40,253.
According to officials, 90 candidates are in the fray across the four Graduates’ constituencies, while 60 candidates are contesting the four Teachers’ seats.
The terms of the eight sitting MLCs are due to expire on November 16.
BJP, JD(U) And Jan Suraaj In Electoral Contest
The ruling National Democratic Alliance has divided the eight seats between its allies, with the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) fielding candidates for four seats and the Janata Dal (United) contesting the remaining four.
The Jan Suraaj Party, led by Prashant Kishor, is contesting all eight seats. The opposition parties are also in the fray, with the Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) contesting six seats and the Congress fielding candidates in five, alongside one candidate from the Communist Party of India (CPI), according to the ANI report.
Patna Graduates’ constituency is among the key contests. JD(U) chief spokesperson and candidate Neeraj Kumar expressed confidence in the National Democratic Alliance’s prospects.
“This Patna Graduates’ Constituency, which is being called a hot seat, is actually a cool seat. Considering the voters’ inclination, the restraint shown by our workers, and the seriousness with which the NDA leadership contested the election, we are confident that the election results will be in our favour," Kumar said.
As counting proceeds, the results will determine the outcome of the eight Bihar Legislative Council contests, amid political competition and questions raised by candidates over the arrangements at the counting centres.
