The West Bengal government is planning to provide government jobs to eligible family members of people killed in election-related and post-poll political violence in the state over the past 25 years.

Under the proposed initiative, one eligible member of each affected family could be considered for government employment. The scheme is expected to cover families of those killed in political violence during and after Lok Sabha, Assembly and Panchayat elections.

This would include families of victims of the post-poll violence that followed the 2021 West Bengal Assembly elections, as well as those killed in violence linked to the 2019 Lok Sabha elections.

How Will The Process Work?

According to sources, the state government is expected to issue an advertisement shortly, inviting applications from families of victims of political violence.

Once the advertisement is published, families will be required to apply through their respective district administrations. Applicants will have to provide details about the circumstances surrounding the death of their family member, including how and when the incident took place.

The applications will then be scrutinised by the government. Officials are expected to verify the information provided before taking a decision on offering employment to an eligible family member.

Cabinet, Law Department Cleared Proposal

According to sources at Nabanna, the state secretariat, the proposal has already received approval from the state Cabinet. The Law Department has also reportedly cleared the initiative.

The government is expected to make a formal announcement on the proposed employment scheme shortly.

If implemented, the initiative would cover families of victims of political violence across multiple election cycles over the past 25 years, including those linked to Assembly, Lok Sabha and Panchayat polls.
